The best games of 2020 are really starting to fill out as we rapidly approach the end of the year. As we all know, 2020 is a hugely important year for gaming. Not only are we going to see games take full advantage of everything PS4 and Xbox One have to offer in their twilight years, but we're also getting the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Wasteland 3 is a terrific take on a tried-and-tested formula, and manages to strike a great balance between being tough, but also fair. Tinkerers are rewarded, but there's enough space here for newcomers to the series to find their footing. There's plenty to enjoy here, particularly when it comes to appreciating the weight the game gives to each choice you make - how much it respects your agency and reflects your decisions with consequences that ripple across its world. There are plenty of battle royales out there, but none quite like Fall Guys. Nothing else has managed to pair the high-level tension of surviving until the very end with the complete silliness on offer with the game. The gameplay is straightforward, modes are creative and yet highly engaging, and of course, utterly shareable. Plus, seeing all the little beans running around in their various costumes never fails to amuse. Sam Loveridge

It might not be quite the Thousand Year Door revival that hardcore fans were looking for, but there's something rather special about Paper Mario: The Origami King. Not only does it channel that fun, light-hearted, and often rather cheeky vibe that the Paper Mario series is famed for, but it also feels like a celebration of Super Mario lore as a whole - from the characters to the worlds that it brings to life. Of course, there are new characters and mechanics to explore and get to know too, including your new sidekick Olivia, and a brand new ring-based battle system that requires more strategy than Paper Mario titles have before. It's a fantastic game that is stuffed full of secrets of collectibles too, meaning you get plenty of adventure for your time investment. Sam Loveridge

Cor, the PS4 has had some cracking exclusives hasn’t it? From Infamous: Second Son on launch, to Bloodborne mid-way through, to The Last of Us Part 2 earlier this year, the PS4 has been riding high for years and it’s going out with a bang too. Ghost of Tsushima sees Jin Sakai, the head of Clan Sakai and nephew of Lord Sakai, on a quest to fight back against a Mongol invasion. Alongside a group of unlikely comrades, the island of Tsushima offers an utterly gorgeous open world to explore, with villages to save, friends to help, and countless breathtaking photo opportunities with one of the best photo modes seen in a video game. Ghost of Tsushima has an enthralling story as Jin attempts to thwart the Mongol takeover, so if you’ve got the time to dedicate to this 20+ hour epic, you won’t regret it. Ford James

Counter-Strike may have dominated the reflexive shooter esport market for years, but there's finally a new contender. Valorant is the new title from Riot Games (previously known for League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics) and it combines the pinpoint precision required from a game like CS, with hero abilities like you'd find in Overwatch. On paper, it sounds like carnage. In reality, Valorant is in the running for shooter of the year. With just four maps and 11 agents in rotation at the time of writing, Riot is providing consistent updates and balancing tweaks to ensure the Valorant experience is as competitive as it can be. Numerous esports organisations have started investing in the game, so whether you're a newbie to this genre and want to practice in unranked or you're a Radiant-tier ranked player who hasn't had their big break, Valorant could be the game for you. Plus, it's free! Ford James

Good things come in small packages, and while Minecraft Dungeons is very much on the small side - with a campaign that takes little under eight hours to beat - it's also barrels of fun, especially when enjoyed with others. Mojang's simplified take on the action-RPG dungeon crawler trades classes and skill trees for more easily accessible mechanics targeted towards a younger audience, but makes up for it with satisfying hack-and-slash combat that brings some much-needed pomp and pizzazz to the age-old genre. With more content already on the way in the form of new DLC, and plenty of replay value in the form of secret levels, near endless loot, and difficulty sliders, Minecraft Dungeons is easy to recommend, so long as you know what to expect (and - more importantly - what not to expect) from its bitesize bundle of content.
